Marion is located at the northeastern area of South Carolina. Its first settlers are Native Americans who were enticed by the beauty of the Great Pee Dee Rivers and Little Pee Dee. Later on, English settlers from the coast of South Carolina started to move into the area. It was during the late 1700s when the area started to prosper, which eventually led to the establishment of Marion.

It was named after Gen. Francis Marion, who was known as the “Swamp Fox” of the Revolutionary War. Through the South Carolina Legislature, a charter was issued and the town was given its name “Marion,” back in 1847. You’ll find a statue of this hero in the town’s square. This historic district is located minutes away from US 501 and is also convenient to the Interstate 95.
Visit the Marion Country Museum if you’re into antiques, oriental rugs, and other furnishings. The historic building features rotating exhibits and is listed on the National Register for Historic Sites. It was the first public school in the country and was later on transformed into a museum.

If you are into cycling and hiking, you should go on a two mile trek at the City of Marion Hike and Bike Trail. It starts from the City’s Historic Train Depot to the Catfish Creek Canal.
If you’re planning to visit Marion in May, you should schedule your trip during May 17-19 so you can attend the Marion Foxtrot Festival. The heritage festival features a parade, street dance, fireworks, food, arts, and crafts. Marion also offers several dining options including City Food & Spirits, Richard’s, Jimmy-B’s, and T-Roys.
